Step 1:
The Tori, Sensei John Harquail prepares to demonstrate Defense against a Hair-Grab on his uke, Robert Lecomber (2nd Kyu).
Why would anyone grab your hair? Perhaps to rip your wig off!! Or as you can see in the next picture. |
| |
Step 2: To pull your head down and push their knee into your face. Not very nice. It will hurt. So what do we do?
| |
Step 3: The first thing Tori does is to step back This will have the effect of breaking Uke’s balance Jitsu is about many things and one of them is to gain advantage over your opponent by getting them off balance and you staying strong.
| |
Step 4: As Tori steps back he also turns his head to the side. If Uke is still holding on this will have the affect of twisting his body.
| |
Step 5: He is now off balance and his hands and upper body slightly twisted
| |
Step 6: While Tori is turning his head he brings his right arm up and over Uke’s extended arms
| |
Step 7: Pushing Uke’s arms down to the floor making him even more off balance
| |
Step 8: (+9 & 10)When Uke tries to regain his balance by coming up Tori brings his right “back fist” up and into Uke’s face just below the nose. Tori’s arm should be like a spring sliding down and then springing back up.
| |
Step 9: N.B. The action of stepping back, turning the head, and bringing the arm over are all done at the same time. Practice that without Uke. Make sure also that you are lowering your weight by bending your knees otherwise there is a danger of you losing your balance. Try to get into the habit of lowering your weight for most of your techniques.
| |
Step 10: N.B. The only thing missing in this sequence of pictures is for Tori not to be focusing on Uke but on his mates waiting to pile in and hurt Tori. If all goes well with the technique they will think twice and give Tori his wig back!
