Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 1:
Here we have someone Uke on the right who is giving all the verbal agro and “offering Tori out “ “Come on then “, he says and starts to move towards Tori (Pictures 1-2)

Technique of the Month   Step 2:
Tori moves into a Jitsu stance and waits for the attack. Tori drops his weight and bend his knees He has almost come down to the same size as Uke.

Technique of the Month   Step 3:
As Uke punches Tori defends by getting out of the way “Off the line” blocks with his leading hand in the stance and keeps his other hand up as a protection in case Uke punches with his left. Tori keeps his knees bent otherwise he may lose balance.

Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 4:
Tori steps into Uke’s space and takes his balance by pushing his head backwards and to the side the rest of his body follows.

Technique of the Month Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 5:
The three Pictures show how Tori’s left foot moves. At first it is in front of Uke’s right foot but Tori has to place it beyond Ukes’and slightly to one side at the back of him. If you imagine he is standing on a clock You want to be placing your left foot to Eleven o’clock. These pictures do not show Uke’s knees bent backwards but that is what will happen to him when you step to your left (His right).

Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 6:
Tori having placed his left foot at about eleven o.clock to Uke he has placed himself on balance for the next move which is to bring his right leg through and reap back Uke’s right leg.

Technique of the Month Technique of the Month Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 7:
These pictures show the throw from a left hand punch. Tori will be in his stance. As the punch comes in Tori steps to his left placing his left foot in front of Uke’s right foot. Then steps to the right placing his right foot this time at two o’clock to Uke’s left leg. Do not be worried about the left hand side it is quite easy. Just remember to place your right foot out to two o’clock.

Advanced O-Soto-Gari should not be attempted unless authorised by your instructor.

Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 1:
As Uke punches with his right Tori steps off the line as before and blocks with the leading arm but this time draws the arm forwards along the line that Uke is punching. If that was all that Tori did uke would go sailing past and would have to take another step to get back on balance. As a defence that is good enough in itself provided Tori could run away, but that is not the case here and Tori has something else in store for Uke!

Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 2:
As Tori draws Uke on he places his right hand behind Uke’s head and turns his hips to face the same way as Uke. To do this he pivots on ball of his left foot. Tori's right leg is now slightly on the outside of Uke's right leg and thus in position for the “Gari” which is the reap

Technique of the Month Technique of the Month Technique of the Month Technique of the Month   Step 3:
The first two pictures show the continuous pull which is the main part of this throw. Uke is completely off balance and it is just a matter of putting in the reap, (second two pictures) and then it is all over for Uke! Thanks to James Taylor 2nd kue for being the Uke.
